Yesterday marked our first day in a new Australian town. We woke up soon after 6 am, cleaned up our cottage in Lennox Head and hopped on a bus that dropped us off at the Ballina airport, just a short 30 minutes away. A few of us (me) were worried about our bags being too heavy for this flight but the security check turned out to be as relaxed as the typical Australian personality. We got through security, waited about 30 minutes, then boarded the plane which felt small in comparison to our international plane.
Upon arrival in Sydney we got on a shuttle van which dropped us off at our accommodations downtown at the Sydney Harbor YHA. The bus ride was a little bumpy, the driver may have given me minor whiplash but we made it. We are staying in a hostel that sits overtop an active archeological site and has a sweet rooftop that overlooks our side of town. One room was ready when we arrived so we dropped our luggage there and walked down to the Australian Hotel to grab a bite to eat. I ordered a "tiger prawn" pizza that satisfied my hungry tummy.
We checked into our rooms around 2:00 and then left to explore part of the city shortly after. We hopped on a train which took us into town and we spent a few hours learning our way around the streets of downtown Sydney. The city is similar to New York City or Washington D.C. with a ton of sky scrapers but also a lot of character that makes it unique. Part of the group went to the Glenmore for $12 steaks and salads at dinner time and others enjoyed the view from the rooftop for the evening. Overall I'd say it was a successful first day in the city of Sydney!
