Hi everyone! This morning we were
busy with two lectures, one about surf injuries and the other about groin pain.
Lisa taught our first lecture and Simon Prior taught our second one which was
his masters project. After his lecture I got to go into town and observe his
physiotherapy clinic which was a very different approach to physical therapy clinics
back home. While there I was able to watch him go through two new evaluations
of people who had just walked in off the street and one more who was coming
back in after 4 weeks. After getting to observe the main physiotherapist in the
area we went out and learned how to play cricket from one of the players on the
Lennox Head team named Jared. No one in our group has ever played before but a
few of us had backgrounds in baseball and softball which may have helped a bit.
Batting in cricket is something that is easy enough to explain as a combination
of a golf swing, hockey swing and baseball swing with a plastic paddle that is
smooth on one end and pointed on the other. Bowling the ball is described as a
windmill motion and some of the fastest bowlers at the professional level throw
up to 90 mph. After learning about the game of cricket and how to do the basics
we played a little pick up game. With the hour break that we had I decided to
go to the library and relax before our next activity which was at 5. When we
all met back up in the rugby field area we ran into a group of Australian
teenagers who were obsessed with the United States and one in particular,
Nugget, wants to move to Los Angles when he gets older. It was funny talking to these teenagers
because they almost seemed to know more than we did about the United States.
They made sure to tell us all about the Great Lakes and how great New York was.
Once our rugby instructor, Harry, arrived we left the teens and started warming
up. He had us doing all sorts of agility, passing and tackling drills which
left our bodies sore. After our practice was over we were invited over to watch
the Lennox Head Trojans practice for their match on Saturday. Seeing them
practice made me reassured that this is not a sport that I want to be playing.
Some of us stayed for the entire practice and then talked to some of the guys
after and learned that a lot of them have been to the United States before and
have traveled to more states than I have. Out of the ones that we talked to
they seem to be really hooked on Miami, Florida and New York. Our last
adventure of the day was going to find something to eat because since we had
stayed at practice so long almost everything in Lennox Head was closed at 8:00
pm. Luckily earlier in the day we had found a little Mexican restaurant that
was having Taco Thursday for $6 and as we, Lexie, Lindsay, Emily, Michael,
Colby and I, were racing there we were afraid that they would be closed. When
we got there our waitress told us that we were just in time to sit inside which
we gladly did. It was a fantastic Mexican place and I would gladly go back. That
sums up our third day here in Lennox Head.
